Math Kangaroo 2013

Mon, 2012-10-01 22:21 — topbananaadmin

This school year, Top Banana once again participate in the Math Kangaroo competition. In addition to holding two test sessions at our Newton location, we have opened a new test center on the South Shore.

Math Kangaroo in USA, Since 1998

This year, Math Kangaroo in USA celebrates an anniversary. Congratulations to Maria Omelanczuk and her crew on making this wonderful competition a success year after year!!!

Every year on a third Thursday in March, thousands of students in grades 1 through 12 come to Math Kangaroo test centers around the country, and around the world, to try their skills at solving interesting math problems. Any student who can work independently can participate. The competition test consists of a 24 multiple choice problems for grades 1 through 4 and 30 problems for grades 5 through 12. Each problem, if solved correctly, carries 3, 4 or 5 points. The maximum possible number of points is 96 or 120 depending on the grade level. All participants are acknowledged with a certificate, a T-shift and a gift.

The contestants' answer cards are sent to the Math Kangaroo headquarters in Illinois after the competition for grading, and the results are announced in May. The winners are determined based on the overall score that is the sum of the points the student receives for the correctly solved problems.

In addition to Math Kangaroo test center in Newton, Top Banana has now opened its second test center at the South Shore YMCA Mill Pond in Hanover, Massachusetts. Two test sessions are available each location, at 4:00 and 5:45 PM, and both locations are open to the public. Registration is open and ends on December 15, 2012.

Participating in events such as Math Kangaroo is a very rewarding experience. Students are exposed to math and logic problems beyond the school textbooks which create opportunities for children to show their critical thinking talent and problem solving acumen. It's also a terrific setting to check one's endurance and test taking abilities. But the most valuable part of the experience is drawn from the preparation for the big day. Parsing the problems that were offered in the past on Math Kangaroo and other similar competitions, bouncing ideas with the fellow students and researching the solutions are the ingredient of becoming a better mathematician and a more confident learner.

Every year, during the months proceeding the competition Top Banana hold a series of events such as workshops and practice test sessions. If you would like to receive updates about such event, please join our mailing list.
